I thought it would be worthwhile
to outline the process involved with having a custom doll made. Many times
clients have contacted me regarding a doll to look like their child or
themselves at a particularly important event in their lives. A project
such as this is very possible.
First I must tell you that I am not a sculptor.
I choose a face mold that has the same face shape or outstanding facial
characteristic such as a big smile, as the person I am "copying". Then
the rest of the details such as the complexion color and shape and color
of the eyebrows and lips are painted in.
As you might have guessed, I work from photographs.
I like a close-up full face photograph as well as a photograph
of the whole person usually wearing the outfit that the doll will
wear.
When a wig in the appropriate color and style are added along
with the clothes that are a favourite of the person, the resemblance
is usually quite remarkable.
Naturally, all these aspects are discussed many times with my clients
until we are both satisfied that the doll will turn out as we both envision
it.
I have included an email I received from my client (with her permission)
that commissioned a large adult woman doll to look like her friend and
mentor. We discussed many aspects of this project and my client decided
that because her friend was so special she wanted the doll to be a spectacular
angel doll.
"I got her all unwrapped this morning and she is GORGEOUS!! I put her
all together (wings and such) to see how she would look and took a couple
pictures.
You did SUCH a great job on the earrings and neckless!! All the jewelry
is just perfect!
Of course, I also had to check out her stockings and garters - they are
adorable!
Her hair did get a little mussed as you said it would, but I curled little
tendrels around my finger and let it hang down and it looks so beautiful!
The wings are INCREDIBLE!! How on earth did you do that?! I love
how they shimmer! Thank you SO much for creating such a wonderful
Christmas present for my friend Mary!
It's been great fun working with you! And, if you ever need a reference
I would be more than happy to provide one."
